We have had this product for over a week now. My wife is a light sleeper and effected by light. The projection and unit display do not bother her at all. Maybe because they are blue light. Very impressive product, and the nature sounds assist my wife with drifting of into slumber. She deals with insomnia, and the nature sounds really help her. Better than sleeping pills. Lets face it, waking to a gradually increasing volume of a natural sound is much more pleasant than the other alarm clock units which mimic an air raid siren. I think I will really like the sunrise lamp light during the winter months when it is really dark when I wake up. We have no complaints, thanks Homedics.

If you are an engineer, or mechanically inclined, the poor human factors design - namely, the interrogation-light-in-the-face, so amply described in previous feedbacks - can be corrected. I cut-up a 1mil-thick black trash bag and placed it over the clock display, as well as the projection LED. This reduced light throughput by 2/3 and made the product usable in a darkened room. That's only a stop-gap solution to prevent excessive light pollution in the bedroom. I gave this product one star, because the excessive light output makes this bedside clock unusable for its intended purpose.
To be deserving of 5 stars, this product needs two changes:
1. It needs red LEDs, because human factors engineering research proves that humans respond to light frequencies above red with increased alertness, not something you want to achieve constantly with a bedside clock.
2. A photo sensor, coupled to a solid-state dimmer inside the unit will assure the right LED display and projection lamp light emittance, especially as the bedside lamp starts brightening.
